Marblehead Little Theatre (MLT) and Marblehead’s Mugford Street Players (MSP) join forces to present Ira Levin’s Prize classic comedy-thriller DEATHTRAP, opening Friday, October 5th with a 7:30 p.m. performance at the Marblehead Little Theatre, 12 School Street, Marblehead, MA.

Holding the record for the longest-running comedy-thriller in Broadway history, DEATHTRAP was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Play, when it opened in New York in 1978. It received a rave review from New York Times theater critic Walter Kerr, who wrote that it contained “effrontery everywhere and fun straight through.”

Masterful in its construction, DEATHTRAP is a multilayered play with plot twists and comic turns, garnished with thunder, lightning, unexplained noises, screams, antiquated weapons…even a nosy psychic who intrudes delightfully at the most inopportune times. Broadway playwright Sidney Bruhl has endured an 18–year dry spell and is desperately in need of a hit.  When Clifford, a former student, sends him a first draft of his first play entitled Deathtrap, Bruhl smells money and allows a raft of wicked ideas to invade his brain.  Hilarious skullduggery ensues!

Directed by MSP Artistic Director John Fogle, DEATHTRAP was selected as the ideal October entertainment.  “With the World Capital of Halloween as our next-door neighbor,” Fogle says, “we wanted to address the spooky season without being redundant.  DEATHTRAP has been on our to-do list for years and we’re thrilled to reacquaint local audiences with this classic play.”

Marblehead writer-actor Andrew Dunlop plays Sidney Bruhl, with Carole Weidman of Beverly portraying his wife, Myra, and Johnny Redmond of Arlington playing Clifford. Julie Korzenik of Marblehead as the psychic Helga ten Dorf and Bob Karish of Salem as lawyer Porter Milgrim round out the five-character cast.

Marblehead’s Greg Mancusi-Ungaro produces the production, through special arrangement with Dramatist Play Service, Inc., and also serves as set and lighting designer. Costume designer Elvira Schoenthal, sound designer Thomas Saltsman and stage manager Emily Wallick support him.

DEATHTRAP plays Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 3:00 through OCTOBER 21 at Marblehead’s Little Theatre, located at 12 School Street in downtown Marblehead. Tickets are available at www.mltlive.com and at Arnould Gallery.  For more information call 781-962-0409.
