Letters from War – Auditions

Marblehead Little Theatre is excited to announce non-equity auditions for their upcoming production of Letters From War. 

Letters from War is written by and will be directed by Nate Bertone. 

SYNOPSIS: Mae, a grandmother in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s, must move into a nursing home when her adult daughter, Lily, can no longer care for her. Mae’s granddaughter, Madison, uncovers a mysterious box of letters while cleaning out the home. As Mae and her family read these letters, Mae is thrust into a new reality with her long lost love, in fragmented, clouded memories and hallucinations. With the help of Lily, Madison, and a young stranger, Mae must fight the effects of age and Alzheimer’s to uncover the truth of her past before time runs out, in a musical tale of love, loss, and the strength of family.

AUDITIONS are by appointment. Walk in’s will be auditioned as time allows.

Monday, August 14th from 6:00pm – 10:45pm
Tuesday, August 15th from 6:00pm – 10:45pm.   

Call-backs will take place Thursday, August 17th at 6:00pm.

The first rehearsal is scheduled for Monday, December 4th, 2017.  To schedule an appointment time, please email auditions@mltlive.org  Rehearsals will be held December 2017 through January 2018. Performances are scheduled for the last week of January and first week of February. This is a non-equity production. Equity actors interested in auditioning will need to obtain a waiver from Actor’s Equity Guild.

Character breakdown:

Mae – (55+) An elderly African American woman with Alzheimer’s Disease. Losing her wits, but still has a strong sense of humor. Physically frail. Must be a confident singer.

Clayton/Kent – (18-25) Clayton is a young white male from the south, enlisted in the Vietnam War. Lover of Mae. Musician/Writer. Kent is a young and awkward neighbor. Roles are doubled. Strong folk guitar player and singer.

Lily – (30-55) Primary caretaker of her mother with Alzheimer’s Disease. Single Mother. Daughter of Mae and Clayton. Mixed Race. Strong folk singer, guitar playing is a plus.

Madison/Young Mae – (18-25) Granddaughter of Mae. Writer. Smart, with awkward tendencies.  Young Mae is the 18 year old version of Mae – young, love-struck, uninhibited.  Roles are doubled. Mixed Race.

Young Lily – (7-10 or young adult, if can play that age) Young version of Lily – primarily appears in Mae’s hallucinations. Mixed Race.

Ensemble – 4 Actor/Musicians. Looking for 2 rhythmic instrument players (Guitar, Piano) and 2 melodic instruments (Violin, Cello). Additional instruments are welcome! All must be confidant singers able to hold harmony in a choral/a cappella setting. Some movement/dance involved.

PLEASE PREPARE a one minute contemporary monologue. Please do not bring Shakespeare. Letters From War is a drama with light-hearted comedy. We ask that you bring something in the style of the show.

Mae, Lily, Madison/Young Mae, Young Lily:

Please come prepared with to one minute of prepared vocal music. Folk, Americana or Country highly encouraged. No accompanist will be provided so be prepared to sing a cappella.

Ensemble & Clayton:

Please come prepared with up to one minute of prepared vocal music. Folk, Americana or Country highly encouraged. Accompanying yourself is highly encouraged. No accompanist will be provided so if you do not accompany yourself on an instrument, we will ask you to sing a cappella. Additionally, up to one minute of music on your chosen instrument. Music in the style of the show (Americana/Folk/Country) is highly recommended. If Guitarists/Pianists choose to accompany themselves for the vocal selection, they will not have to play anything additional.
